Teaser of the Ukrainian Biopic Film “Dovzhenko” Presented at the Marché du Film of the 78th Cannes International Film Festival.
At the 78th Cannes International Film Festival, during one of the world’s main film markets — the Marché du Film — the teaser of the biographical drama “Dovzhenko” (directed by Kostiantyn Konovalov) was presented at the discussion panel “Biopic as a Tool for Decolonizing Ukrainian Culture and the History of the Soviet Occupation.” The film was introduced by the Odesa Film Studio and is being made through international cooperation by the company “Odesa Film Production” with support from the Ukrainian State Film Agency (Derzhkino).
The movie takes viewers to Odesa in 1926 — a city recovering after hard times, full of jazz, ballet, boxing, and big dreams about cinema.
It tells the story of a young Oleksandr Dovzhenko, who comes to Odesa to make his first film. His goal is to create real art. But the reality is different: the NKVD wants propaganda, not beauty. Still, when he is close to giving up, Dovzhenko finds the strength to resist — thanks to the support of his friends: writer Yurii Yanovskyi, ballerina Ida Penzo, and the director of the film studio, Nechesa. Together, they dare to make a film that does not follow the rules — a film about freedom.
“Dovzhenko” is not only an adventure drama about the most famous Ukrainian filmmaker. It is also a story about the power of art, friendship, and youth in the face of a totalitarian system. And about the price one must pay to stay true to oneself.
“For our team, it is important and symbolic that it is Odesa Film Studio producing this biopic about the legendary Oleksandr Dovzhenko, because his career started there in 1926. The theatrical release of the film will be dedicated to the 100th anniversary of his first feature film,” the creators said.
“Our goal is to show that Ukrainians are not only strong and freedom-loving people, but also a talented, creative, and educated nation. This is the first feature film dedicated to Oleksandr Dovzhenko. We are determined to share the lesser-known pages of this great Ukrainian artist’s life with a wide audience,” said the film’s producer, Anna Docheva.
The first teaser received positive feedback from the event’s guests, and is now available for the general public. The film has already caught the attention of international distributors and film critics. Its premiere is planned for 2026.
We are happy to congratulate the team of Odesa Film Studio on the presentation of the teaser for the film “Dovzhenko”!
